Prof. Dr Yael Tamir

Prof. Dr Yael (Yuli) Tamir is the President of Shenkar College in Israel and an Adjunct Professor at the Blavatnik School of Government, Oxford University. Representing the Labor Party, she served as Israel’s Minister of Immigration from 1999 to 2001 and as Minister of Education from 2006 to 2009, as well as Deputy Speaker of the Knesset and as a member of various committees. Tamir received her B.A. and M.A. from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and her Ph.D. in political philosophy from Oxford University, where she wrote her thesis under the supervision of Sir Isaiah Berlin. She was a Professor at Tel Aviv University and a scholar-in-residence at Princeton, Harvard, the European University in Florence, the Central European University in Budapest, NYU, and Penn. Tamir is the author of Liberal Nationalism (1993) and Why Nationalism (2019), both published by Princeton University Press, and of numerous articles in the fields of moral and political philosophy, philosophy of education, feminism, and human rights. She has received many academic awards for her work. Prof. Tamir is a founding member of the Israeli peace movement.
