Prof. Dr Tim Crane

Tim Crane is a British philosopher who works mostly on the philosophy of mind. He has been professor of philosophy at CEU since 2017. Before coming to CEU he was Knightbridge Professor of Philosophy at the University of Cambridge, and before that he was professor at UCL in London. Crane founded the Institute of Philosophy in the University of London in 2005, and was its first director. He has published 6 books and over 100 academic articles. His first book was The Mechanical Mind, an introduction to the philosophy of AI and cognitive science (1995; 3rd edition 2014). His most recent book is The Meaning of Belief, an account of religious belief from an atheist’s point of view (2017). His work has been translated into Arabic, Chinese, Croatian, Estonian, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Spanish and Swedish. He was the philosophy editor for the TLS from 2012-2020. He is currently working on a book on AI, and on the nature of the unconscious.
