Prof. Dr Jörn Leonhard

Prof. Dr Jörn Leonhard is Chair of Western European History at the Albert Ludwig University Freiburg and a prize-winning author. Having studied history, political science, and German philology in Heidelberg and Oxford, he received his Ph.D. in 1998 and completed his post-doctoral qualification at Heidelberg University in 2004. From 1998 to 2003 he was a Fellow and Tutor at Oxford University; Visiting Research Fellow at the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in the German–American Center for Visiting Scholars in Washington, D.C. in 2001; Fellow of the Royal Historical Society London in 2002; and Senior Fellow at the Institute for Contemporary History of the Historisches Kolleg in Munich from 2016 to 2017. From 2007 to 2012 he was Director of the School of History at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) and in 2012/13 Visiting Professor at Harvard University. His research and publications have received multiple awards. His most recent English publication is Pandora’s Box: A History of the First World War (2018). Jörn Leonhard has been Honorary Fellow of Wadham College, Oxford University since 2019.
