Prof. Dr Viktor Mayer-Schönberger

Prof. Dr. Viktor Mayer-Schönberger is Professor of Internet Governance and Regulation at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford, where he researches the role of information in a society of global networks. Before that he taught for a decade at Harvard. His book, Delete: The Virtue of Forgetting in the Digital Age, has received many awards, including the Don K. Price Award for Best Book in Science and Technology Politics, Section on Science, Technology, and Environmental Politics (STEP) by the American Political Science Association. Born in Austria, Professor Mayer-Schönberger founded the software company, Ikarus, at the age of 20, and developed Virus Utilities, which was at the time the best-selling software product in Austria. He was voted one of the top five best young entrepreneurs in 1991, and Person-of-the-Year in the State of Salzburg in 2000. Professor Mayer-Schönberger serves on the boards of many different businesses and organizations, including Microsoft and the World Economic Forum. He studied law at Harvard, among other places, and international relations at the London School of Economics. During his school career he won regional competitions in programming and in the International Physics Olympiads.
