Prof. Dr Jürgen Renn is Professor of the History of Science and Physics and Director of the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin. He studied physics at the Free University, Berlin, gaining his diploma in 1983. He then studied and researched in Rome, Princeton, Paris, and at Boston University. In 1987 he completed his doctorate in mathematical physics at the Technical University, Berlin. From 1986 to 1992 he co-edited the Collected Papers of Albert Einstein, published by Princeton University Press. From 1989 to 1993 he was Assistant, then Associate Professor of Physics and Philosophy at Boston University (becoming Adjunct Professor in 1994). From 1991 to 1996 he was Co-Director with Peter Damerow of the Arbeitsstelle Albert Einstein at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development and Educational Research in Berlin. In 1993 he was Visiting Professor of Philosophy at the University of Tel Aviv and in 1993–94 at the ETH, Zurich. In 1994 he became (Founding) Director of the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science. In 1995 he was made Honorary Professor of the History of Science at the Humboldt University in Berlin, and in 2006 Honorary Professor of Physics at the Free University, Berlin. Professor Renn occupies many scientific positions and memberships in Germany and abroad including Member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and the German Physical Society. He is Joint Editor of Science in Context, and Boston Studies in Philosophy of Science.
